Union College Addresses Addiction Through New Certification

Though substance addiction and abuse is a significant problem in Kentucky, there are relatively few certified alcohol and drug counselors. Union College’s Department of Psychology hopes to remedy that through the creation of a new certification program.

Union College’s Department of Psychology, led by Dr. Joni Caldwell, recently announced the addition of a Chemical Dependency Certification Program. The program is open both to undergraduate and graduate students seeking a degree in psychology, as well as to professionals in the field who want advanced training.

According to Mike Sewell, who will teach courses leading to certification, the need for the program in southeastern Kentucky is clear. “There is an overwhelming problem of abuse and addiction in our part of the state, and a great need for highly trained, credentialed individuals to help address the issue,” he explained. “We have to approach the problem of abuse and addiction from the standpoint that those who provide treatment must be properly trained.”

Mr. Sewell is well equipped to provide that training. He has spent the last 26 years devoted to the issue of substance abuse as an Outpatient Counselor, Residential Program Counselor, and as the Regional Substance Abuse Director. Mr. Sewell has served on the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors Board since 2003, an elected position with final appointment made by the Governor. He will work with other Union psychology faculty with experience in chemical dependency dynamics, clinical assessment, treatment techniques, experiential training, and forensic psychology.

In addition to the academic programs, the Psychology Department plans to offer community seminars on topics related to chemical dependency that will qualify for continuing education units (CEU’s) for professionals in the field.

A Master’s in Clinical Psychology and a Master’s in Counseling Psychology are also available at Union, making it possible for professionals seeking chemical dependency certification to pursue state licensure as a Psychological Associate or Psychological Practitioner. A five-year combined Bachelor’s / Master’s program has been added as well, allowing exceptionally qualified undergraduates to complete a Master’s degree in an accelerated timeframe.
